CO-CREATION

IN PRACTICE

Build up complexity step by step

Co-creation is an intensive and challenging process. Dropping students unprepared into a situation that requires them to co-create a solution to a complex issue together with a professional field partner will result in frustration among both parties rather than in learning gains. Sufficient attention for a gradual approach is, therefore, important. Cases in point are the five clusters in the PXL University of Applied Sciences and Arts Authentic Education model (developing discipline-related building blocks – exploring the professional field – project-based approach – participation in actual practice – practice-oriented research) and the Odisee University of Applied Sciences Growth Path towards Co-creation  (rather than concurrently adding to complexity in all the components of an educational process, addressing one component at a time: for example, first taking the context component one step further; then taking another step with respect to the technology used for the co-creation process; in a subsequent step, pursuing collaboration with different partners from the professional field or with professional field partners and researchers, and so on).

Structure of the Bachelor of Media and Entertainment Business programme provided by Thomas More University of Applied Sciences:

  • Business lab, media and entertainment business first stage

Students develop a prototype for a new and original multi-platform format and communicate about their efforts. We are involving the professional field in students’ creative growth process from the very start and have them formulate a well-defined challenge for the students. The students constitute a shadow cabinet that works on concrete briefing in parallel to the companies. Thus, they provide the companies with inspiration.

  • Business lab, media and entertainment business second stage

Students pursue a revenue model and a business plan for a media partner. They present themselves as media professionals who know how to market a media and entertainment product to a public.

Focus on social inclusion in the third stage of the Odisee UAS Bachelor of Remedial Education programme – Learning raised to the square:

Prior to the start of a work placement, students and the professional field partners offering the work placement position complete a training week focused on developing social inclusion tracks for vulnerable citizens. During this week, they are provided with insights that are also new to the professional field partners. In a co-creation process, concrete cases from the professional field are tackled. In this process, the students apply various competencies that they have acquired earlier (such as thinking out of the box). On the basis of this process, the parties collectively outline a project plan, which the students implement co-creatively in the workplace during their work placement. In the second semester, supporting peer group sessions are organised.

Integrated Care work placement in the Bachelor of Nursing programme of Erasmus Brussels University of Applied Sciences and Arts: students assume responsibility for overall care in a hospital unit. The students collaborate with the interprofessional team of the unit to provide high-quality care and to function in a small team composed of fellow students.

Nursing students take over responsibility for an entire hospital unit. They organise and carry out total care in a multi-disciplinary team. They collaborate with the unit’s interprofessional team. Within their team, they conduct a critical analysis of an existing process and present this to the unit.
